Anton Lauridsen & Lizzie Brueggert

My great-grandfather, Anton Lauridsen, was born on April 15, 1883, in Knoldeflod, a small settlement near Varde, Denmark. When he was 27, Anton left Denmark and arrived in Halifax on Feb 8, 1911, aboard the S.S. Corinthian. Anton was headed to the Chicago area and following his older brother Laurid, who had immigrated in 1903 and his younger brother Simon who had immigrated in 1906. In 1912, Anton married Lizzie Brueggert in Kanakee County, Illinois. Anton's application to become a naturalized citizen in the US was stamped denied, possibly leading to a decision to move to Canada in 1915. With the promise of affordable land in Canada, Anton and Lizzie moved to Southey, Saskatchewan. Homesteaders in the district were mostly of German and Scandinavian background, and Anton & Lizzie knew people in the area who helped make the transition easier. They homesteaded in the Southey area and raised 9 children. There were many ups and downs to early pioneer life. One of the Lauridsen's "downs" came on May 23, 1926, when a small cyclone demolished the farmstead. All that remained was the house with half of the roof missing. Thankfully, my great-grandmother Lizzie and the children who were in the house were unharmed. In 1948, Anton & Lizzie retired from farming and moved to Regina.
