My great-grandfather Josef Wirll immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1921 from the German speaking villages of Felizienthal in Galicia ('Galizien' in German).
Galicia was the northern-most province in the Austro-Hungarian Empire until it's dissolution after World War I. Felizenthal and it's neighbouring village ofAnnaberg are located in the mountainous Carpathian region and founded as colonies in the 1820's by settlers from Bohemia. My family also has connections to Machliniec, another German colony in the region.
In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles ceded this area of Galicia to Poland. Today the area it is part of western Ukraine and Felizenthal has been renamed Dolynivka.
